Grade 6 Energy Generation Letter Task Outline

Greenville’s Energy Generation Problem

GOALS

  • To demonstrate an understanding of the different ways energy is generated in Canada
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the environmental and social impacts of methods of electricity generation in Canada

Scenario

You live in the city of Greenville Ontario. The city of Greenville is growing quickly so the municipal government is looking to develop a new energy generation program to keep up with the increased energy demands. The possible choices for Greenville program are:

Hydroelectricity                  Solar energy                        Wind power                       

Nuclear Energy                   Coal

For this assignment you will be taking on a role and writing a letter to the municipal government of Greenville. The roles you can choose from are:

Environmentalist                Concerned Parent              Local Business Owner

Unemployed citizen          Local Farmer                       Energy Company
                       
Another role of your choice (must be approved by your teacher)

In your letter, you must try to persuade the government to choose a specific method of energy generation. Your goal is to encourage the government to support your choice.  Use specific examples and evidence to support your opinion. Consider the pros and cons of the environmental and social impacts of your choice.

You will be required to do research related to the methods of energy production in order to have an informed opinion. Go to the blog at www.willowdalescience.blogspot.ca to find some links to kick start your research.
