Earth: Our Home Base

What is a planet?

·       A planet is an object in space that moves around a star

·       It is a sphere (a ball) that is at least 1000 km is diameter

·       Planets do not produce their own energy (light and heat) like stars do

·       Pluto is no longer considered a planet. It is called a “dwarf planet”.


The Earth: Our Special Planet

·       The surface is mostly covered in water

·       The atmosphere allows us to breathe and it protects us from the harmful rays of the sun

·       It is the only known planet that supports life

Rotation

·       Earth rotates on its axis spinning like a top

·       It takes 23 hours and 56 minutes to spin completely once around

·       If our side of Earth is turned toward the sun, we have day

·       When our side is turned away from the sun, we have night

Revolution

·       Earth revolves around a star called the Sun

·       The Earth and all the other planets in the solar system revolve or orbit around the sun in a “circular” path

·       It takes 365.25 days to for the Earth to complete one orbit (revolution) around the sun
