Section 10.2 Notes

The following 3 terms are important to know for section 10.2:

Temperature is the average energy of the moving particles of a solid, a liquid, or a gas

Thermal Energy is the total energy of the moving particles of a solid, a liquid, or a gas

Heat is the thermal energy transferred from an area of higher temperature to an area of lower temperature

This is the video we watched in class. Remember that we use the term "Thermal Energy" for the total amount of energy in a substance and this video refers to it as "heat". We are using the term "heat" when we refer to the transfer of thermal energy only.

Key Concepts
Chapter Summary
• Solutions consist of solutes and solvents.
• Solutions can be dilute or concentrated, and saturated, unsaturated, or supersaturated.
• The concentration of a solution is the amount of solute dissolved in a specific amount of solvent.
• The concentration of a solution can be described in qualitative and quantitative terms. (8.1)
• Solutes and solvents can be identified in various kinds of solutions. (8.1)
• Solubility is affected by temperature, type of solute or solvent, particle size, and stirring. (8.2)
• Solutions and mechanical mixtures are separated in different ways. (8.3)
• Water is sometimes known as the universal solvent. (8.1)
• Gases dissolve more in colder water than in warmer water
• Water is sometimes known as the universal solvent. (8.1)

Grade 6 Persuasive Letter Writing Guideline Due Tuesday February 19th

What you should include in the body of your letter

Paragraph 1: Introduction

  • Introduce yourself (remember you are role-playing)
  • Describe your choice of energy generation for Greenville

Paragraph 2: The Pros

  • Identify the pros or “good things” about your choice of energy generation; be sure to consider the environmental and social benefits
    • An environmental benefit could be reducing carbon emissions
    • A social benefit could be providing jobs for people in the community

  • Write this in a “persuasive” way; this means your are trying to convince someone to choose your method

Paragraph 3: The Cons

  • Identify the cons or “not good things” about your choice of energy generation
  • Explain why these cons are not really a problem and that your choice is the best one
    • For example, nuclear power poses a risk of a meltdown – but there are a lot of safety measures in place to prevent one

Paragraph 4: Conclusion

  • Summarize your point of view and conclude in a creative way to help convince the government to choose your method of energy generation

Grade 6 Energy Generation Letter Task Outline

Greenville’s Energy Generation Problem

GOALS

  • To demonstrate an understanding of the different ways energy is generated in Canada
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the environmental and social impacts of methods of electricity generation in Canada

Scenario

You live in the city of Greenville Ontario. The city of Greenville is growing quickly so the municipal government is looking to develop a new energy generation program to keep up with the increased energy demands. The possible choices for Greenville program are:

Hydroelectricity                  Solar energy                        Wind power

Nuclear Energy                   Coal

For this assignment you will be taking on a role and writing a letter to the municipal government of Greenville. The roles you can choose from are:

Environmentalist                Concerned Parent              Local Business Owner

Unemployed citizen          Local Farmer                       Energy Company

Another role of your choice (must be approved by your teacher)

In your letter, you must try to persuade the government to choose a specific method of energy generation. Your goal is to encourage the government to support your choice.  Use specific examples and evidence to support your opinion. Consider the pros and cons of the environmental and social impacts of your choice.

You will be required to do research related to the methods of energy production in order to have an informed opinion. Go to the blog at www.willowdalescience.blogspot.ca to find some links to kick start your research.
